Research Computing Advisory Board

Research Computing Advisory Board is created by
the VP of Research

The projected continued growth in RIT's research programs has created a need for more computational capability, storage, networking, special purpose computers and software, as well as collaboration tools for RIT faculty, students and research staff. At the same time, there are external programs and initiatives that encourage and support research collaborations on a regional, national, and global basis. Actively engaging in these research activities can provide a competitive advantage for RIT while also supporting the RIT Strategic Plan objectives that address scholarship and research.

Establishing a research computing infrastructure and a long-range plan is an important element of RIT's growth in scholarship and research. A Research Computing Advisory Board (RCAB) has been established to assist with this objective. The role of this Board is to:

  • Provide advice, counsel, and support to the Director of Research Computing for decision-making, developing long-range plans, and promoting the program among RIT faculty and staff
  • Participate with the Director of Research Computing in interfaces with other universities, the business community, and government
  • Assist the Director of Research Computing to obtain funding for Institute research computing activities through donations, grants, and contracts
  • Assist the Director of Research Computing with research computing training and awareness initiatives
Gurcharan Khanna, Research Computing, will serve as Chair of the Board and Carl Salvaggio, Center for Imaging Science, will act as Vice Chair. The remaining board members are:
  • Stefi Baum, Center for Imaging Science
  • Manuela Campanelli, Math, Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation
  • Emilio DiLorenzo, Information and Technology Services
  • Chance Glenn, ECTET, McGowan Center for Telecommunications Innovation and Collaborative Research
  • Scott Hawker, SE
  • Gregor Laszewski, CS, Center for Advancing the Study of Cyberinfrastructure
  • Jim Leone, IT
  • Stefan Preble, Microsystems Engineering
  • Ferat Sahin, EE
  • Andreas Savakis, Computer Engineering
  • Pengcheng Shi, IT, GCCIS PhD Program
  • Gary Skuse, Biological Sciences
  • George Thurston, Physics
  • Paul Tyman, CS
The Board will meet quarterly during the academic year. Any questions regarding research computing can be addressed to the Director of Research Computing, Gurcharan Khanna or other members of the RCAB.
