Research Computing is planning for advanced network capabilities to support the
research environment at RIT. The initial goal is to connect research areas on
campus to the 1 Gigabit RIT backbone at an equivalent capacity.
As of 5/1/07, two levels in building 76 and two levels in building 74 are now
connected at 1 Gigabit. In addition, a few ports in building 74 are also configured
to use IPv6.
The next goal is to gain access to 10 Gigabit networks from experimental research
areas to support research and development work in distributed parallel computing
and uncompressed high definition video over IP networks for real time communications.
